Announcing a Unique Training Opportunity!

The Southwest Branch Training Center located in Westlake, LA, has been selected by Pelican Chapter - Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) as the training site for the 2008 Summer Day Training Program. Made possible by initial funding in 2007 as a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the Department of Housing and Urban Development - Office of Community Development, this program is administered by the Louisiana Workforce Commission. Its' principal thrust is to provide Recovery Workforce Training to an area of the state devastated by Hurricane Rita three years ago.

Similar training was offered last summer (2007), and today, there are close to 100 graduates in our state who have established a new career in the industrial construction field, with the promise of challenging work, excellent pay and benefits, and solid potential for career growth. This program offers:
  • Free advanced level NCCER craft training in electrical, pipefitting and welding
  • Payment of a student stipend ($50.00 per day for an 8-hour day)
  • Receipt of basic tools upon graduation
  • Job coaching to graduates' job seeking and keeping skills
  • Job fair to assist graduates in finding employment
Selection for this training program is competitive, and to qualify, applicants must be 18 years old by September 4, 2008, and have a high school diploma or GED. The screening process for the limited number of openings in this training program include a personal interview, passing both a ACT WorkKeys© test, and drug screen.

Classes will begin on Monday, June 16, 2008, and will be approximately 12 weeks (electrical, pipefitting) or 14 weeks (welding) in duration. Classes will meet 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
