The all day affair hosted 29 student competitors in five separate craft categories. Categories included were: industrial electrical, instrumentation, millwright, pipefitting and welding. Competitors ranged in background from high school students to field workers and were selected by their respective ABC Training instructor and sponsored by different ABC member companies. The following winners of each category will move on to represent the Pelican Chapter in the ABC National Craft Championships in March:

Alexander as the new Director of Education for the ABC Baton Rouge Training Center. Robert Clouatre, the current Director of Education, is retiring after 9.5 years of service to the Pelican Chapter. “I am confident that David will continue the tradition of excellence that Robert Clouatre leaves behind,” Pelican Chapter President Alvin Bargas stated. “Under David’s leadership, we look forward to remaining a premier provider of construction craft training while addressing the demand for a skilled construction craft workforce.” Alexander was previously the Director of Secondary Schools in the Ascension Parish School system and was the principal at Dutchtown High School from 2005-2011.

Each year, the Pelican Chapter, ABC hosts a craft competition for students selected by the school’s instructors to showcase their skills. This year, there are 29 students registered to compete in Baton Rouge. A separate welding competition will be held at the Southwest Training Center in Westlake, La. Categories included in the competition are: Industrial electrical, instrument fitter, millwright, pipefitting, pipe welding and plate welding. The competition is judged by Pelican Chapter members who are experts in their respective fields, and the winner of each category will move on to represent the chapter in the ABC National Craft Competition held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in March. Competitors are scored based on a number of tests including a written assessment, a hands-on assessment and a safety score during the hands-on assignment. The purpose of both the local and national competitions is to showcase the exceptional talent of the next generation of the skilled craft workforce being trained in Louisiana and across the country.
