Picture

ABOUT STEP

Founded in 1989 as a safety benchmarking and improvement tool, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety management system that dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 25 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents.

STEP Overview

What is STEP? Established in 1989, ABC's Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP) is a safety benchmarking and improvement tool that dramatically improves safety performance among construction industry participants regardless of company size or type of work.
Why participate? Every ABC member wants to send its workers home safely every night. Take the first step towards achieving world class safety by participating in STEP, whether you are beginning your safety journey or continuing to strengthen your performance. Getting started with STEP is free and can help you lower your workers compensation insurance rates.
Who should participate? Contractors and suppliers that want to commit to achieving world-class safety performance
  • Commercial and industrial contractors that perform work in the:
    • Construction of buildings (NAICS code 236)
    • Heavy and civil engineering construction (NAICS code 237)
    • Specialty trade (NAICS code 238)
  • Suppliers that perform work in the:
    • Other construction merchant material wholesalers (NAICS code 423390)
    • Ready-mix concrete manufacturing (NAICS code 327320)
    • Lumber, plywood, millwork, and wood panel merchant wholesalers (NAICS code 423310)
    • Metal service centers and other metal merchant wholesalers (NAICS code 423510)
    • Brick, stone, and related construction material merchant wholesalers (NAICS code 423320)
How does STEP work? Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates (TRIR and EMR). Companies receive recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Participant based on this date.

ABC 2020 Safety Performance Report

Until now, relatively few studies have been conducted on the correlation between the use of measures companies can take to keep workers safe on jobsites—leading indicators—and the number of incidents, accidents and injuries that occur—lagging indicators. In 2015, ABC created the Safety Performance Report to address this issue. The charts and summaries in the 2020 edition present the clearest picture yet of the remarkable impact that leading indicator use has on a company’s safety performance: fewer disrupted or lost lives and a safer, more productive jobsite regardless of the size of the company. In fact, companies that engage in leading indicator use are, statistically, considerably safer than their peers.
